The theme of “idealism is a gift” is shown By Hinton in the Outsiders when Pony wouldn’t accept that Johnny was dead. When he was sick and delirious Randy came to talk with him and Randy said that he was really sorry about Johnny’s death. When Randy told him that, Pony kept denying that Johnny was dead. Darry said it was because he was still very emotional about it and wasn’t quite himself yet. So they told Randy not to bring that up again until he was better. I think Randy was a little confused and he left with mixed thoughts. Pony was very sad when he relized that Johnny was dead, but he accepted it.

We agree with what you said, and we see other examples of "Idealism is a Gift" in the book. We also see it in Johnny when he was lying under the stars thinking about some place where there was no Socials and greasers, just ordinary people who get along with one another. Johnny also wished for a better life because his parents abused him and never cared about him. He even thought that Ponyboy's life was better than his. So being able to dream about an ideal world was a true gift for Johnny.

We also agree with what you said about Johnny. While there are examples of “idealism is a gift” in The Outsiders there are also many in our world today. One world example is that the media is making kids grow up to fast. They could be exposed to TV shows that express bad language and inappropriate apparel. Kids are thinking that those people are idols and try to be like them. But these “idols” could change their whole view of life. We think that this could be a major problem in the future. What do you think?

We agree with what you said, and we see real world examples of "Idealism is a Gift" in other ways. One example is people that are getting abused. They strive for a better life without pain and suffering. This case is very similar to Johnny's. He always feared his parents, and preferred staying away from home and staying with Ponyboy. People who are abused usually take the same path, so the gift of idealism gives hope for a better life. These people can also strive to their goal of being loved because they know that their is a better world out there.

We agree with what you said about people who are being abused. Your example of Johnny and Ponyboy is a good idea. We think that there is also other places that they have groups like in The Outsiders. People are suffering just like Ponyboy and Johnny and the rest of the gang. Most people are too afraid of what the outcome would be, and never make change.

We agree with what you said. Another example of "idealism is a gift'" is shown by those who are less fortunate. The less fortunate people want to live a regular life with everyday necessities like food and water. In the story, the greasers have a similar situation. Especially Darry because he has seen the fate of his relatives and he wants a better future for Ponyboy.

We think that’s a very good example. So many people are starving and don’t have money. Another example we thought about is the people who were abandoned in Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Some people didn’t have a place to go and some even died. Help couldn’t come to them fast enough and they were left stranded. The theme "idealism is a gift" is still used today to give examples in the world by important people.
