If you know me, you know that to disconnect from my school work is hard. Yet, I did. Boundaries, right? I need balance. I met virtually with a colleague to make sure all concerns were addressed and assessed. I enjoyed a Seder meal with family. <span style="background-color: white; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">I shut down my computer, Chromebook, and laptop last Tuesday evening after addressing all turned in work. I literally packed them away. Out of sight and out of temptation.

<strike></strike>

Wednesday dawned with a virtual prayer group meeting, our second as a group. It was good. As a family, we had a holier week than we had had in a while: a family Seder, Holy Thursday virtual services, Good Friday with a family watching of The Passion and the Divine Mercy Novena begun, Saturday evening bunny gifts, and Easter Mass. All without the fuss of public expectation. Simple, humble adoration. Easter dinner was a simple home-cooked meal. The best kind with all the nuclear family at home. Missing extended family was looped in via FaceTime.

Monday arrived. News of a colleague's daughter with a collapsed lung. News of my great fear (or great opportunity, still not sure which) that the schools will remain closed for the rest of the school year. Sadness in my heart was swift. I long for my classroom filled with students. Long for their sweet, and sometimes sassy, smiles and interest, even their disinterest. I long for my fellow teachers, so I reached out to them. Those who would understand my heartache. Those who could share the load.

Today, I dove back into my poetry. It flowed, raw and passionate. Maybe not perfect, but perfectly me. Tomorrow, I meet virtually with my students. I am uncertain what to say, yet the poem I will be discussing and introducing them to is "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost. Melancholy reality definitely. Praying the words will come--the words to comfort, to assure, to calm. Words I need so much for myself. Yet, putting others before self often helps one hear the words needed.

And yet, I'm mad. Angry. Upset. Sad. People did not stay home. They gathered.

And yet, I'm hopeful. I have everything I longed for: family at home, time to address tasks and to-do lists, time for self, and time to slow down.

YAY! I am so ready to flex my virtual poetry muscles. They're tight, they're rough, and they're not ready, but I am! Instead of posting daily, I'm creating a Google Site to host my poems as I draft them using past 30 DPC Facebook and Ethical ELA poetry prompts.

So enjoy my fledgling attempts at poetry here! This site does not include the prompts, just my poems.
This week was good but also tough. I was so tired of technology by Tuesday afternoon, that mowing the yard was appealing. I was not in balance and needed to get outside. Learning new software (Zoom and Loom) and re-learning software I had not used since Greg had cancer (Screencastify because Loom and I did not get along) was a bit frustrating. My videos were not my best, but they were real. I made many mistakes and begged forgiveness from my students. Google Hangouts were good! Community building! Students could help each other. We made it through!

The grading period ended Tuesday and grades were due Thursday. I was non-stop grading when I wasn't recording lessons. I didn't leave my computer except to mow the yard Tuesday and take a walk Wednesday. I would have declared Thursday and Friday tech-free days, but I had office hours and a few grading issues to resolve. We had an earlier rosary than usual to unite in prayer with the Pope on Wednesday. In a foreign language. It still was beautiful. My back patio called to me to clean it off and so I did. I wish I had a pressure washer to do a better job, but it's ready to be used this spring and summer. Mostly in the morning because it gets full sun in the late afternoon.

My husband's school system is back up and running. I'm glad they are learning again and he feels needed again. It's sometimes not good to have too much time to think.

Friday was a blessing. I ventured out to the store for the first time in two weeks. New food for the following days. While I enjoy homemade peanut butter and grape jam crackers, there might be a limit to how many times I will enjoy them and I don't want to find that limit. I only saw one couple in full masks and gloves. I did feel a bit alarmed. It brings the seriousness of this epidemic to full consciousness. I used the wipes on the cart and didn't touch items that I did not need. While the store employees were applauded for their time and sacrifice by the customers (announced over intercom), there weren't any visible precautions other than cashiers cleaning their station when they didn't have customers. I used an antibacterial wipe on my hands when I returned to the car and followed it with hand sanitizing gel. I threw the bags away when I was at home quickly and then washed my hands again.

The Pope asked us to join him in prayer and adoration at noon our time and 6 pm Italy's time. My husband, youngest son, and I joined him on the Vatican News app on Greg's phone, which was thankfully translated into English, but we also had the Vatican News YouTube channel open on the tv so we could see it in a larger picture. What a beautiful hour with the Lord and the Pope. If you missed the Pope's homily, read it here. The imagery, that beautiful old cross, his frailty, adoration, the singing, and music all moved me and filled me with a sense of peace that I had been missing during the past frantic week and a half. Slow down. Rest. Be. The stillness and quietness of St. Peter's square. The twilight approaching as the hour progressed. I find it interesting that I always become sleepy when I go to church for Mass or adoration. Does my body and soul know that I'm in a place of safety and can rest? That He has me in his arms? This peace was what I needed...

to face what happened when I opened my email. Silly Tanya. I love teaching poetry almost as much as I love reading and teaching The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. I was starting my introduction to poetry with a technique learned from the Summer Institute I was fortunate enough to be a part of with the National Writing Project of Acadiana (aka Acadiana Writing Project). It's fun and involves music and quirkiness--all necessary to take the seriousness away from people's dread of poetry. I used metapoetry to gauge students' understanding of what they believed poetry to be. I followed up with a couple of poems from the "What Poetry Can Do" part of Naming the World by Nancie Atwell. They're poems that are a bit different from what students expect, yet show how poems can be whimsical and yet convey a deeper theme. I ask that students attempt to create a poem for each type that we cover, so they can get those poetry muscles flexing. Then, to be fair and hold them accountable, I ask that they submit one of the three poems that they attempted/wrote to a FlipGrid. Ahh, youth. Long story short: cheating admissions via email. One student was bored and offered to write poems for friends. Yet, because of the peace in my soul, I was able to respond without personal hurt or drama. Saddened, yes. Angry, no. Usually, this would have crushed my spirit, but not this time!

So, back to Saturday. Back patio with a cool breeze and the puppy eating the grass. If only the world's problems involved saving him from a caterpillar! Sadly, a death has occurred in our area due to the virus. Infected rates are climbing. Fear has to be fought. Positivity is a must. Ventured into a different store today because I forgot an item yesterday (icing for a cake my son was baking). This store is taking the virus seriously! People sanitizing carts, and there is plexiglass between customer and employee, and plastic over the credit card area. I definitely felt safer in this location and will be back there for any future grocery needs, like the coffee I forgot for my husband.

Balance is necessary. Heading into next week with more balance is happening. I've already created a menu, so that makes meal prep easy. I'm planning my chores so I can enjoy next weekend off with family. I'm kicking off the 30 Days of Poetry Challenge next week. Cannot wait to see what the students will create! Next week is Digital Spirit Week! Looking forward to a bit of fun! Grateful for this peaceful time in the storm.
It's Saturday and I'm tired of being on the computer, laptop, and Chromebook. Yes, I use all three. Each has an advantage and a disadvantage. While I am tired, I know I have accomplished quite a bit for my students. I have created and posted lesson plans until May 1. Why May 1 when we should return to school on April 14? Because I want my students to know I'm not going to suddenly shift gears on them when we return. That would be jarring for all of us. This way they can have a glimpse into the future, and, if we are kept away longer, then at least they know that it's already been planned for and they're ready for it. (Technically, I have lessons planned until the end, but no need to alarm anyone yet, right?)

So, many places to make learning accessible. I'm planning to start with one Zoom session per week (recorded and posted later that day for students) and using Loom (or Screencastify) to record videos of my lessons. If students want me to be present to them, then I will Zoom daily. It will be their call. The balance of keeping rigor and relevance with the needs of my students is of utmost importance to me. Personally, it's easier to teach poetry live, but recordings allow me to be consistent and concise, and students can rewind and re-watch as needed and as their schedule allows. Now, to find a quiet place to record the videos with an almost four month old mini-dachshund and three boys (two sons and a husband) in the house. I think my best time will be early in the morning when they are asleep. Plus, my youngest son is one of my students, so that presents a challenge when I need to present and he needs to be online with his peers. He went into his room and shut the door during our trial Zoom and that worked well. My oldest son is now attending his college classes virtually for the remainder of the semester. My husband is a public school teacher and his school system has shut down his online teaching/learning because the rest of the system is not having lessons and assessments due to equitable access and services. I'm not sure how I feel about that. As a parent, I am a bit horrified. As an educator, I sort of understand. I am very happy (ecstatic is the word I'd rather use, but I'm trying to keep that inner nerd in check) that our system has decided to continue learning as usual. However, I'm looking forward to a slower teaching pace soon as I finish up grading papers and projects for this past quarter. I've been procrastinating myself a bit to cook and even dust. If it weren't for a wet yard after the rain, I'd be outside mowing the grass. Soon, I tell the grass.

<strike></strike>

Of course, the memes are circulating about how parents-turned-at-home-teachers are handling this crisis. It's both funny and sad. Funny, because I appreciate the humor of my non-teaching friends. Sad, because as parents we are the first teachers of our children.

My husband is using his newfound time to start recording his journal thoughts from his cancer journey from last year in a blog. The puppy has finished his first round of puppy training. The college kid has found new ways of procrastinating and wants to visit his girlfriend. The eighth grader is enjoying a later wake up time, FaceTiming his friends, and the flexibility of learning. We all are learning to co-exist again. It's been a few years since we have been under the same roof for so long. It's nice. It's simple. I'm grateful for this time with them, especially when I hear of extended family struggling with melanoma (a cousin) and isolation from a positive COVID-19 test of her husband (a different cousin) and a hospitalization (an uncle-the father of the two cousins).

And now, to procrastinate a bit further, I feel the call of gingerbread cookies begging to be made, baked, and then eaten. 😋 Perhaps we will enjoy them over a game of cards.

He's a thoughtful, relevant, and gifted writing teacher. He has graciously shared his Coronavirus lesson plans with teachers. Since I am not currently teaching writing, I have decided to use his prompts to write about this unprecedented time in history. I wish I had done this when I was teaching during Hurricane Katrina! The memories I have from that time period should have been captured.

I'll start with how this virus has disrupted my school year.

Truly, I avoid watching the news because it brings my mood down. I watch for the weather forecast and then turn it off, but I was aware there was a virus in China and it was killing people. I caught a few clips of how it spread in the past couple of weeks, but wasn't truly concerned until last week. And then, I thought, that we would cancel school for a week, at most, and that the cancellation wouldn't happen until this week at least. Well, Friday, March 13 rocked my little world. We went from talking about hypothetical at the beginning of the day to being told to send students home with supplies they would need for four weeks. Four weeks. It was surreal and it still is. However, we roll with what we can do and do not worry about what we cannot control.

We did not send our students home with their ChromeBooks (CBs). By Monday evening, the principals had had meetings with the Superintendent of the Diocese and were implementing plans. An all-call went out to the middle school teachers to help cut the power chargers out of the CB carts so students would be able to pick them up the next day because the school had to be shut down by Wednesday and no one could return until April 14. So, I arrived and helped other teachers cut the zip ties that our tech team took a long time to install. A few scrapes and cuts later, we were done. The carts were brought downstairs and lined up in the lower school hallway. Silent sentinels ready to share so that learning could continue.

Tuesday afternoon arrived and the CB drive through pick up began. For three hours, teachers withstood the hot wind, then pouring showers, then cool wind, then drizzling rain until every CB was given to grades 7 and 8 and most of the 4-6th graders. Some had CBs at home, but the 7/8th grade team needed the students to use specific apps that were installed.

Wednesday morning our middle school teachers, counselor, ministry leader, and assistant principal of curriculum all used Zoom to hold our first online meeting. It was well presented and we could experience the use of Zoom as participants before diving in and deciding if we would use it, Hangouts, Meet, Screencastify, or other options like Loom to deliver our curriculum to students. The plan laid out was sound and relevant. We would continue to nurture our students' learning and help them have a sense of normalcy during this time period. Concerns from teacher parents of little ones were addressed and everyone had a way to make this work. We would teach the entire grade level during a one hour block. It would give structure students and teachers crave. I'm lucky because my 7th grade students were at the end of a unit and about to start poetry. My 8th grade students were finishing the first part of a Historical Fiction project, and their deadline was extended by a week so they could finish. The quarter was to end on Tuesday, but was extended to next Tuesday for grading purposes. We used this week as a "spring break" and many are saddened that we will sacrifice our usual week off after Easter, but what is one week in the grand scheme of things? So I will begin poetry with the 8th grade students as well since we did not get to cover this unit last year. The blessing of teaching the same students two years in a row! I quickly set up Zoom meetings to test the tech with each grade level and posted to Classroom.

Today arrived and I met virtually with the 8th graders today. Many checked in and we did a pet show and tell, an idea shared online by teachers. Not perfect, but we are all still learning. It was so good to see their faces! Another teacher joined us during the end of the call. It's wonderful that we can have a whole grade level on at one time, but also a bit of a management issue because I cannot see everyone's faces all the time. I'll get better at changing screens soon.

I have another meeting scheduled in the morning with the 7th graders. I'm looking forward to seeing them so much! "Classes" begin on Monday during our scheduled time. Some students were a bit hesitant today about having to sit through an 8 am -3 pm class schedule, but they have options. They can watch a recorded video of the live session later in the day or week and have flexibility with their attendance, just not the work. It's due each Monday. So, my students are now learning like I did in college. Hard due dates with flexible learning options. Isn't tech great?!

As far as home life goes, I'm still grading previous assignments due to a DC/NYC trip with the 8th graders and a Mardi Gras break. I'm able to pray a daily rosary with my boys and plan to attend a virtual conference that starts tomorrow. I am able to spend time with my husband that we didn't have last year when he faced cancer treatments out of town. I am able to clean the house, but who am I kidding? I spend that time lesson planning, watching TV, cooking, or listening to music. I'm having to guard the pantry from hungry boys and I feel like my mother (who was born during the Great Depression) when she would feed us certain meals and say, "This is it. Eat it or not." I am able to actually sit on my back patio and feel the sun on my face. I am truly blessed to be able to do this. A simple life that's not so simple. A back to basics kind of feel. Gratitude is my attitude! Mrs. Chiassonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03315399332102835669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6980406281696861176.post-44205559382385823512019-02-05T21:05:00.001-06:002019-02-05T22:34:41.124-06:00Use Anonymous option to post Hey guys and gals,
Use the Anonymous option to post your comments. School Google account is blocked.
Since your names are included, include whose comment you are responding to. Further, respond only to those comments with names and try to find people with no comments to respond to.
Finally, I extended the due date to Thursday since so many waited until the last minute to do this assignment. I will probably stop moderating between 10-11 pm when my husband’s chemo bag aka “the red devil” is switched out for a different chemo drug. I’ll resume in the morning and throughout the day tomorrow.
See you all next week!
Pair it with film and the poem takes on a meaning at a deeper level.
Skyfall - http://www.tubechop.com/watch/5678984
Tennyson quote from "Ulysses" spoken by M regarding the place of tradition in the modern world:

Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Dead Poets Society - http://www.tubechop.com/watch/5679056

Why do we read and write poetry?

The Outsiders - http://www.tubechop.com/watch/5679098
"Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost recited by Ponyboy Curtis

There are many, many more examples. What are some of your favorite poems in film?
The bees are buzzing and my students are writing and typing furiously to complete the 30 DPC that began on Facebook. This year, I am using a mixture of prompts from the last few years because some prompts are worth repeating next to the new prompts.

I love reading and hearing my students' poems. They are more creative than I ever could be. I am a fledgling poet, but that doesn't stop me from appreciating the gifts of others. My motto is to never ask students to do something that I wouldn't do myself, so I am attempting this challenge once again. While it is tempting to repeat old poems, that would be setting a bad example and I'm trying to model best practices and behavior. We are what we do!

Here's the link to my mixture of the challenge. My writing is going to show revision after revision and some listing/brainstorming before writing--basically the writing process most of us use. I will sometimes be in "writing mode" and others pretty dormant. This reflects my hectic life and the time it allows me to write. For example, a trifecta of sad and bad events left me license-less in another state. So, while I rode shotgun in my own car, I had time to play on my phone and start the challenge. While waiting in the DMV, I had some more time to revise and write some more. Enjoy the challenge of Facebook or this version of that one. Just write! Don't forget Poem in Your Pocket Day is April 30 this year. I look forward to hearing or reading your poems soon! Mrs. Chiassonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03315399332102835669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6980406281696861176.post-12267710236984368382014-07-01T15:37:00.002-05:002014-07-01T15:37:51.151-05:00Kids (and Adults) are Writers Day 1Andrew and I are accepting the Kids are Writers 30 Days Summer Camp challenge. Practicing what I teach...here goes day 1:

I am a writer. I first realized I was an academic writer when I enjoyed writing school research papers in elementary school through high school. They followed a formula, were in third person, impersonal, and were easy to complete. I enjoyed the challenge of writing college papers. I first realized that personal writing was not my forte when I was in college. All of the papers for one English class were personal in nature and written in first person. Having had third person drilled into my head since childhood, this was extremely hard to do. Writing outside of my diary about my personal thoughts and feelings was unthinkable. However, it has been my quest to improve this skill since college.

I love to learn to write about different topics. I love to learn new techniques of writing and this led me to the National Writing Project of Acadiana's Summer Institute in 2007. The fun and innovative ways to teach writing, especially poetry, were exhilarating! In my classroom, I share what I learned. My hopes and dreams for writing include refining my craft and igniting a fire for writing in my students. Accepting and completing this 30 day challenge will help me on my way. As you begin your literature circle study of The Hot Zone by Richard Preston, what are your thoughts and expectations regarding this book? Leave a COMMENT below during class today and then respond to a lit circle member in another class tonight/tomorrow before school. Other homework: read Part 1, Something in the Forest, Jumper, and Diagnosis by Thursday.

Remember to use only first names in your response. Never leave an email address or contact information online. Comments are moderated, which means that you will not see your post immediately. I will approve and accept postings between classes.

In your responses address the member by name. Ex: Hey Tanya, I agree with/that ....Mrs. Chiassonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03315399332102835669noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6980406281696861176.post-82645179115101354332012-07-08T12:25:00.002-05:002012-07-08T12:25:32.026-05:00The Hobbit

Love this graphic for the new Hobbit movie coming out in December! Recently learned that the movie will be made in two parts, which saddens me. It will be like waiting for LOTR all over again. Hopefully Peter Jackson and his cast can deliver another visually amazing and moving story.
Mrs. Chiassonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03315399332102835669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6980406281696861176.post-34375339408653427392012-04-06T15:28:00.002-05:002012-04-06T16:15:14.512-05:0030 Day Poetry Challenge Day 6: 5 highlights/FBDay 6: Write a poem of any length incorporating every word from your latest Facebook status update in any order (original).
