Outsiders Theme 2 Group

Assignment:
First, you will exchange concrete details found in The Outsiders to support your theme through blog posts and comments. Two different concrete details must be sumbitted (one from each group). Secondly, you will exchange personal or general real-world examples illustrating the theme in today's society. Again the ideas must differ. Finally, you will exchange support for and disagreement with Hinton's message.
Theme:
Adapting to life may mean sacrificing your humanity and getting tough.

When Hinton talks about “Adapting to life may mean sacrificing your humanity and getting tough,” Dally is a perfect example. He spent three years on the wild side in New York. Hinton refers to Dally as being the “toughest, meanest, and coldest person in the gang.” He was alone with no one to take care of him. He was arrested when he was ten years old. In New York, he got into a lot of gang fights, where he blew off steam. In New York, he didn’t fight for any specific reason, he just fought to fight. When Dally gets with the Curtis brothers and their friends, he is still tough. Even though he has gotten tough, he still has some humanity in him. He can still love. He still cares about Johnny and everybody in the gang.

We agree with Dally being tough and hard, but we also think that Johnny had to adapt with Dally. For instance, Johnny had to change just to live in his house because of his parents' abuse towards each other and towards him. He also had to get tough in order to rescue Ponyboy by killing Bob. In addition he had to toughen up to save the children in the burning church.Johnny did not want to do any of this, but he had to in order to survive in the cruel world in which he had lived. He had to surrender his sensitive personality or his 'humanity'.

We really like your example of Johnny having to adapt to his parents’ abuse and having to deal with killing Bob. We also think that a good real-world example of “Adapting to life may mean sacrificing your humanity and getting tough” would be Hurricane Katrina victims (especially the kids). The kids had to grow up and mature because some of them lost their parents, pets, and toys. They had to try and understand what was happening. The people affected by Hurricane Katrina had to make do with what they had left, which was barely anything. The victims didn’t have anything personal anymore, their houses were destroyed and their jobs were lost. Their picture albums, scrapbooks, and captured memories were gone. They were unable to be replaced. The people affected by Hurricane Katrina had to toughen up and try to find the strength and courage to start their lives over. They had to sacrifice their humanity by having their town, buildings, homes, sometimes even their friends and family GONE.

We agree with what you said about Katrina, but we also have our own example of a disaster. People had to adapt when the tsunami hit Sri Lanka because almost everything they owned was completely destroyed. They had to rebuild and start their lives all over again. They also had to get used to not having their close friends or family around because they were all GONE.

We agree with your example of the tsunami in Sri Lanka. We think that Katrina and the tsunami are both very good examples. Overall, we agree with Hinton’s theme of “Adapting to life may mean sacrificing your humanity and getting tough.” There are a lot of examples if that theme in The Outsiders. Dally and Johnny are both great examples.

Another example of people having to adapt is when we bombed Hiroshima with a nuclear weapon. They had to get used to living indoors for several days so they would not get radiation sickness. The fact that most of the buildings were completely annihilated did not help very much.

We agree with your example of the bombing in Hiroshima. It would be tough to stay inside all the time. 9-11 is also a good example. The people who lost family members and/or friends that day had to adjust very quickly. Everybody was scared that day because we didn’t know where or if they would attack again. We agree that the theme “Adapting to life may mean sacrificing your humanity and getting tough” still exists today.
