Type your first name and last initial at the end of your post.

Using drugs/alcohol has become so common in our society that many people cannot make it through the day without them.

Sadly, I can agree with this statement that drugs and alcohol are items people turn to daily. I cannot turn on television without seeing a drug or alcohol commercial--either selling it or warning of the effects of it by lawyers (my life connection). I'm conflicted because many people abuse something that is not necessarily evil. Our society makes drinking acceptable at a young age, even though the drinking age is 21. So, is it any wonder that when faced with difficult issues that many, like Mrs. Dubose, turn to something that can numb the pain (observations of the world around us)? I admire and have compassion for Mrs. Dubose because she fought to end her life free from addiction to morphine (text connection). Granted, society at that time probably didn't realize the full and terrible effects of drug use. However, our society does. So why do this statement still ring true today? What is missing in us that leads us to something that will ultimately harm us?

I strongly agree that people have to take drugs and alcohol to live, which is a bit sad. There are some things that help us live that are bad for us, but we take these things because sometimes we are not fully informed on what the consequences. Like some medicine might solve one problem, like a headache, but another problem arises, like a heart problem. Things around us can influence us poorly and we must do something just like Mrs. Dubose did. We must get away from the poor influence and have courage to make the right choices. These choices can affect the rest of our life. Yes, many things are shown to us as young people, but help each other so these bad things won't happen to us.

I strongly agree that people use drugs and alcohol to live because many people use them on a day to day basis and it ruins their lives. You see so many things on TV and on social media platforms about drug abuse and they make videos a lot about these things so that it can bring awareness to the issue. I watched a video the other day about some popular challenge and they made a video about a family who had this problem and it went viral. It is just like Mrs. Dubose and her pain killer addiction. People who abuse drugs usually become homeless or even die. Something happened in our family with drugs so I am very aware with this problem, but people try to stop and some succeed, but some don't. These lessons and choices in daily lives affect others and us in bad ways.

I also strongly agree that people have become so addicted to drugs and alcohol that they cannot function correctly. We rely too much on drugs to take away our minor pains that over time lead to bad decisions and bad habits. These addictions can lead us to make bad decisions that can ruin our life. We always see ads for this new drug that can do this or that and we are becoming to much depend on them to live. We also don't bother to look whats actually in the drugs or allow for long term affects before they are available for the public. the story uses morphine a very addictive drug that we in the 1900s had no idea were dangerous.

I agree with this statement, I think it is ok for the use of drugs MEDICALLY, but when people take advantage of it and get addicted all it does is harm them. People may not realize it, due to the fact that some people make drugs/alcohol a daily routine, but it harms them and it seems to get targeted to youth nowadays. Which in that case, "destroys" society in a way, it ruins lives

I do not agree with the alcohol part. Some people may need alcohol every day to function, but not many. The drug part, sadly, is correct. It is to easy to get addicted to drugs, and half the people that got addicted did not know that drug was addicting. For example with Mrs. Dubose, I doubt she knew that Nicotine was addicting when she first started, and when she realized it was almost to late. Also, a lot of drugs have deadly side affects that could make you take other drugs to stop it. On the tv you always see commercials about drugs and the side effects could be eternal bleeding or something when the drug is to help your feet. Then when the eternal bleeding starts you have to go to the doctor for them to fix it, and then take another drug to make sure it stops. Julia W.

I agree that drugs/alcohol are things that some people use in their daily lives. I hear about people being tested for drugs from high schools and the news. people usually take drugs to get away from the pain they have and they end up using them too much. Mrs. Dubose used morphine to get rid of the pain she was experiencing but we must act like she did and stop over doing our usage of drugs or alcohol

I am sad to say that I agree with the statement, people need drugs and alcohol to live. I know in my life, every time there is a big celebrity, they normally "go off the deep end" because of their abusive use of drugs. Maybe they were using it like Mrs. Dubose was - to stop the pain they didn't want to feel. I think drugs are good if used for medicine for the right reasons, but not the kind that is on every news story in our world today. However, unlike Mrs. Dubose, many people don't want to make the effort to stop using drugs because it seems to benefit them. I am proud of Mrs. Dubose for trying to help herself in a way that truly benefited her. Ava C. I also agree when Mrs. Chiasson mentions that the people in our world today do know the consequences of drugs, so what is stopping people from putting it down, even when they know it is harmful?

Drugs and alcohol have become so big in society today, people get addicted and can not live without it. These things can take us over, and then we realize there is nothing wrong with it, and we start becoming unaware of the consequences. In TKAM Mrs. Dubose was addicted to morphine. In their society people were not fully aware of what drugs/alcohol can do to you, but today we are. There are ads everywhere about what drugs can do, and they didn't have these types of warnings back in they day. Gabby L

I strongly agree with this statement because people in our world today can't live without drugs or alcohol. It is truly sad because you need other things to live not drugs or alcohol. I can't watch TV or listen to the radio without a commercial coming on saying how this is better than something else. They are trying to make people think it is better to where they can sell the product. Although, they say it is better for you it is not. People take it like they are taking medicine. They can't go without it for an hour or even a whole day. A person can abuse the product which gives them many consequences because of their action with whatever they are taking. Alcohol is also abused just like drugs. Younger people drink alcohol even though they are not suppose too. Even though there is a law that you can't drink under 21 people still don't listen. Also some parents don't take responsibility of their children and let them do that. The young person could end up being an addict to it when they are older. Just like Mrs. Dubose, she was addicted to morphine and she used it as if it was an numbing medicine for herself. Little does she know that it is destroying her body. A person has so many consequences if they become an addict to what they are taking. Mrs. Dubose noticed what she was doing so she was able to distract herself from wanting to take morphine by reading. This is strong of her because some people know what they are doing to themselves but they keep doing it. Maybe at that time in age they didn't know what they were doing to themselves and there bodies. Maybe they don't know what the consequences are by doing that certain thing. It is so common in our society that everyone know what the consequence and affect to your body are. Why does the person still make the decision to keep doing what they are doing even if they know the affects? Laynie R
Anonymous said…
I agree with Mrs. Chiasson because it is so true. Everyone that is doing drugs are so addicted to it. Even though they know how much consequence there are to this they are still doing it. What makes them keep doing it even though they know it affects there body? Laynie R

I can see how the inability to resist drugs and alchohol as become more and more common in our society do the advancements in the releases of dopimine, nicotine, etc. in these products. It is these same chemicals that cause the individual to become unable to resist these products since the human mind seems to almost need the chmeical in order to survive (addicted). So it really depends on the individual whether or not they are willing and strong enough to quit the addiction or not. It is possible but also almost impossible for the brain and body in some cases. -Luke S

I agree with Ava C when she says that you always hear that big celebrity's normally "go off the deep end" because of there abusive use of drugs. There are many celebrity's that do drugs and they end up hurting their bodies because of it. Celebrities do this for numerous of reasons.

I believe that yes, there are some people in society that can't live without drugs. Many people take these things because they are not fully aware of what these things can do to you. An example of this is maybe someone takes a medicine for headaches they have multiple times a month. They may not realize that yes, it is removing your headache, but that medicine might cause another problem even worse. Some people like Mrs. Dubose take pain medicine. This medicine could hurt you too. Real bravery is like what Mrs. Dubose did. She knew that the morphine was bad for her and so she started to stop and think about it. If we stop and think about it, we will make the right choices. If we make poor choices and abuse things like this, we will be hurt. A real life example is some medicine commercials tell you all whats good about their product, but then they just put the consequences on the commercial super fast and don't announce it. If we are careful we should read these bad things and think about the pros and cons before we consume this stuff. Why are people lazy about what they do and not take time to keep their body healthy? I agree with you Laynie about how advertising can be a driving factor in the addiction process. I feel that these companys are taking advantage of these peoples pain in order to make money. They also know that almost all customers will be back because of how highly addicted they are. It is a cruel system but also a succesfull one. Advertising is also another factor in how becoming "clean" is harder and harder. If you are going through heavy depression, and if everything you here is about how this helps and that helps, what will eventually happen? -Luke S

There are at least two places in TKAM so far that they have mentioned drugs or alcohol abuse and those are Mr. Cunningham and Mrs. Dubose. Mr. Cunningham had it so bad that he couldn't even support his family because he was so addicted. Mrs. Dubose on the other hand, was struggling with addiction, but she knew that she wanted to die clean. She did, only because she was EXTREMELY determined. These two horrible substances changed these two characters lives. It is very hard (and that is an understatement) to stop living that lifestyle. Many people in our world struggle with that. Yes, I believe that many people struggle with addiction and can't go on a single day without either drugs or alcohol or both. Victoria L

I definitely agree with Laynie because drugs are commonly advertised, and people give in to try the drugs being sold. Ava B

I can agree with this statement very strongly because you get people today abuse drug and alcohol use way to often. Almost every social media platform always has something to do with either of those things and most of of the time both. I feel this is also portrayed on children when they are younger because either an older sibling or parent does these things. This could lead to crime and death, so drug and alcohol use should be watched more carefully. Society today is way more exposed to drug and alcohol use and it’s not good for the future at all. In TKAM this problem could be an example in the book when Mrs. Dubose was addicted to morphine. -bella n

I agree with Mrs. Chiasson. I think that it is very unfortunate that people turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with things and fill absences in their life. I think that some people have a really bad condition and they cannot go a long time without these things, like Mrs. Dubose, addicted to morphine. Their bodies just get so used to it and they can't go without it. I think that some peoples cases aren't as bad as others though, some people might be addicted and other might just occasionally use alcohol or drugs to get their minds off of things or to face things that they cannot face, but they can continue to do it only every once in a while. I also think that in some cases, drugs you can get accidentally addicted to, some people get a drug for their sickness and they continue to use it to stay out of pain and then they can't go a long period of time without it. I think on the other hand, alcohol is drinking, occasionally, and then continuing to drink and then it just ends up to you being drunk all the time to where you can't feel anything and then your body can't function without it. A long time ago they didn't have the knowledge that we have today which is understandable in some situations, but today, it is still happening and getting worse and worse and it shouldn't be because of the knowledge that we have in this position. Sadly, I do have to agree with this. People become so addicted to pain killers and things that aren't healthy for their body, that most of the time they can't get enough of it, and they need to have the alcohol or drug just to make it through the day. Their bodies want more and more of whatever it is, and they can't stop taking it because their body doesn't react well to not having it. I recently had an experience with the drug hydrocodone. When I hurt my arm this past weekend, the doctor we saw decided that it would be an acceptable drug to take for pain at night. My mom and I decided against it, however, because it is a drug that people are known to get addicted to. Our doctor, of course, warned us, so we decided not to take the chance because it is very strong, and I wasn't comfortable taking it at my age. Ava B

I for the most part agree with this statement although lots of our society today is involved with drugs there are some that don't believe in this. Society today is so messed up because of drugs and the decisions we have made based off of them. Not everyone is addicted to drugs or has done them. Anna V

I can agree with this statement because I know that many people die from drug abuse and many people are addicted to drugs and alcohol. I think it is sad to say but it is true that many people in our society even children are addicted to drugs and or alcohol. I think peer pressure is also involved in this because others want to fit in. But in conclusion it can be addicting causing many people to not go without it. Gabby P

I can strongly agree with the statement that drugs and alcohol are items that people use daily. As a teenager, music is a big part of my life (not discriminating to anybody who is not a teenager). Knowing how big of a role music plays in my life, I end up looking up to some of these musicians. Sadly though, some of these artist have become medically ill and have even lost their lives because of drug addictions and alcohol addictions. Some examples of this are Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Prince, Avicii, Demi Lovato, ect. Just knowing that I look up to people who have abused drugs and alcohol can make me and anybody sick. Looking back in "To Kill A Mockingbird," I am able to give props to Ms. Dubose for seeing the drug problem in her life and for her taking action and trying to fix the problem. I feel like if most people did what Ms. Dubose did (even though she knew she was going to die), most people would either stop going on drugs or try to stop their addictions in general. What a better place the world could become!

It is true that people cannot get through the day without drugs or alcohol. It is sad whenever you hear that someone is addicted to drugs or alcohol. When we hear this we need to help them out even if it is just by saying a prayer for them because it will not help them if we just sit there and watch our world go to waste. Emma Saltzman
Carson Quebedeaux said…
I agree with Gabby L's answer because just like she said, once people start getting addicted to drugs and alcohol, it is not so easy to stop but it a lot easier to continue using it and unfortunately, this is what usually happens. This is the main issue with drug addictions and how they usually get started. It is also very sad that even with advertisements and news articles about what drugs can do to you, people still take the risk of using these drugs and soon have no other option but to continue using the drugs.

I agree with this statement because people turn to drugs and alcohol which is a sad thing because people can die or become mentally ill and addicted. In high school some kids might think that they can only be cool if they drink alcohol or do drugs, and since they want to fit in they give in to using these things. This causes them to strongly use drugs or alcohol, and they get so addicted to it that they can't stop. Although many people do use drugs and alcohol, there are also many people who do not because they know the damage that it can do to you. Brooklyn B

I agree with Mrs. Chiasson because I think that since people in our society know that it is bad for you, they should be more responsible with drugs. Why are we abusing something that we know will ultimately harm us? Brooklyn B

I agree with Laynie because since drugs and alcohol are being advertised so much, they are already a part of our everyday life in the ads. It is only whenever we give into the advertisements, that we are now taking responsibility of what we are doing to our bodies. We become so addicted to the drugs and alcohol that we cannot stop using them, and the recovery could be long or there could be worse consequences than a long recovery, such as death and illness. It is true that so many people cannot make it through the day without using drugs, which is sad, but it is reality. Every day, people die from drugs, and that proves that some people cannot go without drugs every day. Another reason is that the drugs we are given to by doctors can cause us to get addicted. Sometimes when you get hurt, the doctors offer you a drug prescription to help with the pain, and once the patient starts using the drug, they can get addicted, and some never get off of the drug and die from it. Erin B.

It is very true that people heavily rely on drugs/alcohol to get them through their daily lives. For example teenagers are getting addicted to vaping which is very addicting and getting this chemical in your lungs is dangerous. In TKAM Mrs. Dubose was addicted to Morphine. It became a serious addiction, and find it interesting that she found the drug problem in her life and was able to free her body from the drug before she died. Aiden B

I believe that this statement is true. Drugs and alcohol are in news often and they are very dangerous to our world. Drugs are seen in commercials as well, because some of them had some bad side-affect. They are dangerous, but sadly people get hooked onto them very easily. Alcohol is also in commercials. These commercials, sometimes advertise alcohol which in my opinion is not good. Some commercials have positive messages though, like trying to prevent drunk driving or smoking. If this society wasn't so addicted to these two things then we wouldn't have to see these commercials all the time. Alcohol and drugs are very dangerous and can lead to death. Many celebrities have died, because of these things. It isn't just celebrities though, it is everywhere. Lastly, it doesn't help that in some music or in some t.v. shows these things are glorified.

I can agree with this because from my experience, people in my family have been alcoholics, and my dad is not an alcoholic but still after work he will have a beer or two and a few glasses of wine. Many people today find a way to fit drinking into there morning routine, and that is not good for them or society. Today most people cannot live without some kind of alcoholic beverage after getting hoke from work. Drugs have also been a big problem today in society. Many people today die of an overdose, or just get shot because they were buying drugs from the wrong side of the tracks. Someone in my family who is very close to me is 15 years old and is in the hospital right now due to an overdose, and he was getting the drugs at school. There should never be a 15 year old in a hospital due to an overdose of marijuana because he was buying it from a student. So i agree that many people cannot live without alcohol or drugs. Gabbie B

I do agree with this because people do use drugs and alcohol regularly and they do become drunk and they then can't understand what is taught and they aren't properly paying attention. Many people in schools are drunk and they are going through the entire day throwing up in the toilet and becoming sick, then they feel bad so they leave there work/school and they miss whatever was taught that day.
- I disagree with Camile because there is no way that people can fully get over the use of drugs and alcohol.
- I agree with Mrs.Chiasson because it is very hard for people to get over it they cant get over it fully.
- I do agree with Holden becaus eafter they use it they do become homeless and they then cant do anything else.

I agree with Laura when she says that drugs and drinking addictions are over relied on. Especially with coffee. Most adults can't go through the morning alone without coffee, let alone the whole day. I also believe that we are doing things to stop it. We have had many people stop smoking and the numbers keep going down. So we are doing something against addictions. Julia W.

I agree with Andre because people really do rely on drugs. It has become a problem in our society. Most people need to have drugs to feel good, but really we just need God. Drugs can kill people from overdose. They slowly kill you. Mrs Dubose was addicted to drugs in TKAM, and she overcome it, but drugs are addicting and once you start you don's stop. People admire drugs too they want to drugs and think its "cool".

I believe that this is kind of true, because most of the people that drink are the people that are going through hard times and they are finding "comfort" through the use of drugs/alcohol. But also people choose to be free of the addiction to those things (like Mrs. Dubrose) and find a way to be content.
I agree with Laura C.

I believe that drugs have become so common in our society. People now can hardly go a day without them and they are starting to hurt themselves and there mental being. All it is doing is hurting them though. For example, Mrs. Dubose died due to an over dose on some drugs.

I agree with Mrs. Chiasson because you do see a ton of stuff on the TV about drugs or alcohol and that may be a big influence on kids/ teenagers now.

I agree with Andre because we do rely a ton on drugs to keep our pain away.

I believe some people in our society and world around us have gotten so caught up in drugs and alcohol and they can't do anything about it. They have been a natural obsession that people can not stay away from and can't go without everyday. Like smoking, it is hard to quit smoking because it is an obsession that people can not break, or not try to atleast.

I also agree with Laura because she states that drugs/alcohol Is like caffeine, and most people can not go without it because it is apart of their process of the day or their life and I also agree with Ashlyn because she also states that it is hard for people to get off these things and they know itll be hard, but they keep doing it.

I agree with Andre when he says that people use drugs like caffeine to make it through the day. I don't think that everyone who uses drugs turn to it everyday, but some do. I think in TKAM, it took Mrs. Dubose a lot of effort and will to give up her addiction, and that is what makes her strong. Ava C.

I agree with Jonathan when he talks about how society is different these days and may be impacting the use/overuse of drugs and alcohol in our current world. I also agreed when he said that some people start doing it just to fit in with others, but then it becomes a real addiction that is terrible. Ava C.

I agree with Ava C when she says that you always hear that big celebrity's normally "go off the deep end" because of there abusive use of drugs. There are many celebrity's that do drugs and they end up hurting their bodies because of it. Celebrities do this for numerous of reasons. Laynie R

I agree with Andre on the fact that some people need these things to get through the day. It is sad how people get hooked on things so easily. Some things aren't as harmful to get hooked on, but drugs and alcohol are definitely bad things to get hooked on. Evan C.

I felt sad for people in this society and children today when I read that someone Gabby B is close to is 15 and has had an overdose. I feel that people today get hooked very easily. I feel bad for the society we live in. I hope everyone suffering from addiction can make it through and I hope that he is okay. Evan C.

i agree with bella because social media does have a big impact on our lives. social media tries to give you an answer for all your problems, but half the time social media can put us in the wrong direction. emma s

I agree with the last few comments. There are so many people getting hooked, and more younger kids. There are many people that can quit it easily, but then there are the others that cant stop without being forced too. -Tanner Adams

I agree with this statement, because some people might just want to start off with drugs or alcohol bu just starting it or trying it, but end up getting addicted to it and cannot go a day without it. Friends and social media can also tempt you to do these things and you could wind up being addicted. Lindsey R

I 100% agree with this statement. I agree with it because a lot of people seriously need it to function. Some people nowadays get so much anxiety that they just feel like that they have to have it to calm them down and its the only source of something that can help soothe them. Also, nowadays a lot of kids think drugs and alcohol are the "cool" thing to do and it makes them cool, it doesn't at all. They end up getting addicted, it messes with their mind and makes them think that they need it all the time. There is also a lot of adults that can't function with out them and it messes with their job and lose everything. People need to realize how bad they are and should just turn to God, we need GOD to function everyday not drugs

I think it is ok if you cant go through the day without medicine but only for a medical reason. If it is not for a medical reason then i dont agree.

I agree strongly agree because many people's lives are being ruined and destroyed because of them. People say, "Oh, it's just once. It won't do anything." Then, they get obsessed and addicted. Then, they start to go broke from buying them.

I agree with Andre and Evan, because people are constantly getting addicted to drugs, and overdosing. It is a major problem in society today and it needs to be addressed.

I agree that people cant go through the day without a drug. I think it is ok if it is for a MEDICAL REASON ONLY. People get addicted to medicine and then they soon cant get through the day without it.

I agree with Camille because there is a case where people want to overcome their addiction which is a really good thing.

I agree with Trevor because there is a lot of people who take medicine to hep pain, but there could be another thing that it is making worse. Maggie McCormick
