Often life isn’t fair for the Curtis boys, because their parents have died. Darry has to drop out of school and has to take on two jobs to provide for Soda and Ponyboy. Soda also drops out of school because he has no talent and wants to get a job to help provide for the family. Since their parents have died everything has not been the same. Through no fault of their own often life isn’t fair.

We respectfully disagree that their parents dying is the cause of their life being unfair. However, we agree on how it is unfair that Darry and Sodapop had to drop out of school to take care of their family, and that Darry has to work two jobs. We also think it is unfair that the greasers are judged as being a lower class compared to the Socials, because they are poor. We also think it is unfair that the greasers don't get the chance to have good jobs like the Socials, because they are always looked down upon. They have to strive more than the Socials to be able to survive what they call a cold, cruel world.

Thank you for your response. We appreciate your point of view and agree with your opinion of the socials and the respect they get. Our point was that life is unfair and sometimes parents die. We apologize for the confusion. In the real world another way life isn’t fair, is that people lose their job, can’t provide for their families, and lose their homes. For example, the banks under investigation the people who had worked there are losing their jobs. From no fault of their own, they cannot provide for their families. This real world example, in a way, relates to the Curtis boys. We agree with the theme; often life isn’t fair, on certain occasions. However, we disagree that life isn’t fair for the Curtis boys all the time because at times they do enjoy when they were on their way to the rumble, when Johnny advises Pony to stay gold, and also when soda had his horse , Mickey mouse. Life can be fair, on some occasions, but not all.

We agree with what you said. Here are some of our ideas of the theme , life isn't fair. Often times, being poor is your fault and some times it is not your fault. A real world example would be the soup kitchen. At the soup kitchen, you help serve food to the unfortinate. Some of these people have lost their jobs, didn't go to school, or were born poor.

Another real world example, is murder. Like in the book, when Johnny killed Bob. It isn't fair because people shouldn't go off murdering people for their anger. Only God can decide what happens in someone's future based on how they lived their life.

We respectfully disagree; bob was not murdered out of anger, but out self defense. However we agree that God can decide what happens to someone’s life in the future. We also agree that being poor is often not your fault. As a group, we find that Hinton’s theme “life isn’t fair” is one that takes place in real life. It describes the book well. Overall we agree that life often isn’t fair in the book The Outsiders.
