Finally, you will exchange support for and disagreement with Hinton's message.

In the theme “a hero is not measured by image but by deeds”, it doesn't matter what you look like but what you do. In the Outsiders, when Ponyboy and Johnny save the children from the burning church they are heroes by their deeds, not because of their image. Other people look at greasers as hoodlums and thieves. They are not what your typical heroes look like. They had the bravery to risk their lives for other people they did not know. "Don't judge a book by its cover."

We agree with the example that you all gave with the theme. Another example of "a hero is not measured by image but by deeds" is when Bob tried to drown Pony in the fountain and Johnny saved Pony. He saved Pony by stabbing Bob with a switch-blade. Even though killing is a sin, Johnny killed Bob out of self-defense for his friend. Johnny does not look like a guy who would kill a person. Johnny's image is a scared boy with tattered clothing. We agree with your statement that they do not look like typical heros. "Don't judge a book by its cover" is a great summary of the theme that you all had put. We also think that another example of the theme is when Pony stuck by Johnny in the hospital when Johnny was very injured from saving the children in the burning church. He is a hero in Johnny's eyes because Pony could have easily not cared about him, like his parents do, and just leave him in the hospital to die alone.

We absolutely agree with the examples that you have given us. We really love your perspective of the theme, “a hero is not measured by looks but by deeds.” In today’s society kids that are the class outcast, may come out of their comfort zone and stand up for someone else. People would not be expecting the child to stand up for someone else. To open up like that is very brave and courageous. He/she may look like a juvenile delinquent, but may have the courage to be a hero.

Yes, we very much agree with the example that you all have given us. Another real life example of "a hero is not measured by image but by deeds," is when a person can help another person when your only thirteen years old and helping a cancer victim. If you are only thirteen years old and your mom had cancer, you would be doing everything you can to keep your mom alive. He/she is only thirteen years old and you have to take care of your mom from dying. He/she must be a real hero if you are taking care a person who has cancer when you are only thirteen and your mom is about to die. This is actually a real life example from this classroom that a kid is having to face. In our eyes and others, he/she is a real hero by their deeds, not by their image.

We absolutely agree with what you have said. We are so very sorry about the student’s mother. We also have a student in our grade whose mother is dying of cancer. We agree that these students are examples of heroes and our theme “a hero is not measured by looks but by deeds.” This is such a great example. This is such a wonderful theme to discuss. Although sometimes it can be sad and depressing, but over all this theme is a great way to think about the Outsiders.

We just thought of another real life example of our theme. Our example is a child's grandparent's parents died and their son and daughter were mentally disabled. Then the child's grandfather died from a heart attack and his/her grandmother had to take care of her mentally disabled children. She is a hero to her children for taking care of them by herself without the help of her husband with the children.

We do not quite understand the situation of your example, but we do think that it is an excellent thing to accomplish. People that take care of disabled people are definitely heroes. Another example would be if a child was abused by their parents, and another child would help them and takes in the child while the parents get help. As a group we find that Hinton’s theme “a hero is not measured by looks but by deeds” is a great theme to discuss. This theme is also a great example of the real world.
